4.5 Stars: "Do you know what Dapper is?" That's what I remembered the young( lady)barber asking me as I was leaving. I think I know what it means, or do I really? Is it a state of mind or can a hairstylist/barber make us feel a little better about ourselves than before we entered? At Dapper G's a rough and tumble barbershop in the Westside, I got majorly schooled on that particular concept. It is definitely not like the barbershop you might experience in Southtown nor a fancy Northside spot, with valet parking and lattes. It's more gruff and gritty like the barbers that work there, with their pulse to la calle. So I was lucky to come in right at the moment a barber was finishing up with another patron. No sooner was the bib put on did she begin to clip away. I must admit I tensed up, since this is not my regular barbershop. Fortunately for me she was ultra confident in her abilities and judging from her work with the previous client, had "mad skills." After the buzzing of clippers, edging and extraneous hair on the floor I was more than pleased with the results. Sure this is not some spot in La Cantera. However, the barbers take pride in their work, they get their hustle on to make you "dapper." Haircuts start from $15, five dollars more if you want a straight razor used. All the other services are pretty reasonably priced. Dapper G's is a small barbershop in the Westside where talent supersedes ambience. The service is good, the price is right and the barbers are excellent. I'm not entirely sure I know what dapper means but if its the way I felt when I left, I'll be ready for the quiz next time.
